Today, June 16, at 8 PM local veterans representing the #VetsVsHate movement will respond to the shameful rhetoric leveled by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump against both the Muslim community and veterans who served in Iraq. Trump recently doubled down on his proposal to place a ban on Muslim immigrants, and days later, repeated claims he originally made in September, saying that U.S. troops in Iraq profited off cash intended for reconstruction efforts.
These statements were made in the wake of the horrific Orlando shootings, and just weeks after Donald Trump was caught repeatedly lying about $6 million he supposedly raised for veterans’ organizations. The #VetsVsHate movement publicly called out Trump for this deception, resulting in a press conference at Trump Tower where the nominee hurled vitriol at the media and attempted to discredit the veterans demonstrating outside.
Today in Dallas, Muslim veterans and members of the growing #VetsVsHate movement will challenge Trump’s disgraceful statements. Among the veterans will be Ramon Mejia, a Dallas native, Muslim, and Marine who served in Iraq:
“Donald Trump has belittled my service and berated my Islamic faith, which has provided me a sense of peace while struggling with the consequences of my service in Iraq. As the son of a Mexican immigrant, I am both deeply offended and disgusted by Trump referring to Latin-American immigrants as ‘rapists and killers.’ And now apparently he thinks Iraq veterans are thieves. Trump has never served a day in his life, yet he sees fit to reject my freedom of religion. As a veteran, it’s clear to me that Donald Trump is unfit to be the next Commander in Chief.”
